Day 1: Machachi 3,000 masl– Cotopaxi campsite 3,780 masl
Our adventure starts at the Hostel Casa del Montañero in Machachi at 08:00am. We head south along the Panamericana highway in the direction of el Chasqui, where we register and enter Cotopaxi National Park at the south entrance. From here we continue for an hour in the car to arrive at the campsite.
We take what is necessary for the 4-hour walk to Limpiopungo lagoon and join a path that takes us through an area of paramo (moorland), from which we enjoy the views of several volcanoes including Cotopaxi, Antisana, and Sincholagua. We arrive at the pier where we have the opportunity to take photographs, enjoy our packed lunch, and with renewed energy. Walk around the lagoon before returning to our campsite, where dinner will be served before nightfall – we then rest until the next day.

After breakfast we take the necessary for our visit to the refuge and glacier and we travel for approximately an hour in the car to the Cotopaxi car park, located at 4,500 masl. Here we leave the car and undertake the one-hour uphill walk to reach the José F. Rivas refuge where we enjoy our packed lunch along with a hot drink. With renewed energy, weather permitting, we continue on to the glacier in approximately 30 minutes. From here we have incredible views of the Cotopaxi glacier itself as well as other mountains such as: Rumiñahui, Corazón, Antisana etc. After several photos we return via the same route to the car, which takes us back to Machachi.
